Bret Michaels continued to make tremendous progress in his recovery this weekend -- and one source close to the singer tells us the whole thing is nothing short of "amazing."
We're told Bret was "very aware" and in a "good mood" this weekend during an evaluation with a specialist -- the singer was even described as "somewhat talkative."
It's a major improvement from the "critical" state Bret was in after suffering a massive hemorrhage near his brain stem back on April 23 -- a condition that can often be fatal if not treated quickly by experienced professionals.
After their temporary shelving late last year, the Latino-honoring entertainment awards are back, slightly retooled and better than ever for another go this year, with nominees for the 2011 NCLR ALMA Awards announced bright and early this morning.
Back as always to host the do is Eva Longoria, who'll be joined this year by George Lopez. And?perhaps in an attempt to make it up to fans who missed out last year?this time, the public is king. To say nothing of the Hollywood royalty that made the nomination cut?

Leading the spicy pack this year are Christina Aguilera and Selena Gomez, each of whom scored three nods for their triple-threat work on the big, small and musical screens, getting pitted against each other for Favorite Female Music Artist and Favorite Movie Actress?Comedy/Musical, for Burlesque and Monte Carlo, respectively.
Up against them in the former category is Jennifer Lopez, Naya Rivera and Shakira; in the latter category, they face off against The Other Guys' Eva Mendes and Bad Teacher's Cameron Diaz.
Making the cut for Favorite Movie Actress?Drama/Adventure is Machete's Jessica Alba, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Penelope Cruz, Unstoppable's Rosario Dawson, Battle: Los Angeles' Michelle Rodriguez and Takers' Zoë Saldana.
As for the small screen nods, it's a battle of the Lopi. In addition to Aguilera, honored for her Voice work, and dog whisperer extraordinaire Cesar Millan, nominees for the Favorite TV Reality, Variety or Comedy Personality or Act include George Lopez, Jennifer Lopez and Mario Lopez.
As for other hot battles, the Favorite TV Actress?Leading Role in a Comedy category sees Disney besties Gomez and Demi Lovato face off, alongside Modern Family's resident hot tamale Sofia Vergara, Glee's Naya Rivera and Victorious' Victoria Justice.
Other big name nominees include Grey's Anatomy's Sara Ramirez, Parks and Recreation's Aubrey Plaza, The Office's Oscar Nuñez, Antonio Banderas, Enrique Iglesias, Taio Cruz, Bruno Mars, Ricky Martin and Pitbull.
In any case, there's more changes in the works: as of now, the awards will officially be playing favorites. Literally. Starting this year, rather than value one performance over another, the organizers have finally given in to the popularity contest that these things are and decided to name all categories "Favorite" instead of "Best." It seems particularly appropriate, given that this year fan votes will help determine the winners of the annual show (incidentally, preferences can be logged through Sept. 5).
The winners will be revealed in an hourlong special airing on NBC Sept. 16.

Steven Phillips, a man best known for running one of the largest marijuana smuggling operations in history, was finally arrested in Florida on Thursday. After being on the run for 31 years Phillips.
He managed to escape detection and fly under the radar by using a number of aliases in other countries such as Chile and Germany, marrying a Chilean woman under a false name .
A U.S Marshall woke up Phillips out of his bed in a retirement home to put the cuffs on him, finally bringing an end to his life on the run.
He was arrested in West Palm Beach and brought down to a local police department for processing; his mug shot was taken and the bars were slammed shut in front of him.

Phillips was originally arrested in 1979 and then bonded out shortly after, fleeing the state just before he was due to appear in federal court.
Authorities have commented on how pleased they are to be able to have caught him after all this time, stating that they believed it was unlikely it would ever happen.
The judge that Phillips will be going up against is most likely the one he saw back in 1979.

There?s no denying that Jessie J is a true talent. She was schooled with Adele, Justin Timberlake called her ?the best singer in the world,? and HELLO LISTEN TO HERRR.
But if you?re still not sold, maybe this will do the trick:
Mixing a little Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, and injured first grader, Jessie J is, hands down, the cutest pop star to ever sport GOLD CRUTCHES. We know bumpkus about fashion, but this is something we can get on board with! There?s so much going on here (which is usually a negative, but not in the BWE FASHION SAFE ZONE) that there?s no way you can look at her and not giggle with joy. Her hair is purple! Donald Duck is on her shirt! Her shorts are tiny! And are those Air Jordans? Jessie J looks like a giant adorable toddler (and we say it with LOVE because we only wish we could pull that sh*t off).
Actually, as a matter of fact, we just realized what we?re doing for Halloween. Sorry, Monica Lewinsky, maybe next year!

The dog days of summer are upon us, people. It?s August, it?s hot outside, and the news cycle is starting to slow to a crawl. The general sluggishness of the season is even affecting the music industry, as music fans don?t seem to be gravitating towards any new material. Instead, they seem to be content to play the same songs that they?ve had on repeat all summer long.
Case in point: Katy Perry?s ?Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F),? which has exhibited a stranglehold on the top of our Song of the Summer Countdown for six consecutive weeks. Her song looks to have a lock on the prize at this point, but then again, maybe The Throne (aka Jay-Z and Kanye West) can mount a last-minute challenge when their highly anticipated collaboration Watch The Throne drops next week? Stay tuned!

For the first time since splitting from husband Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez is speaking out about her divorce. The singer spoke to Vanity Fair about the marriage and its demise, saying, ?That was my biggest dream, and I really worked hard at it. We both did. Sometimes it doesn?t work -- and that?s sad. But I remain an eternal optimist about love. I believe in love. It?s still my biggest dream. I am positive -- determined to move forward with my life, bring up my babies, and do the best job I can as a mother, entertainer, and person. I now look forward to new challenges. I feel strong.?
Lopez made the remarks to Vanity Fair contributing editor Lisa Robinson just weeks before the July 15 announcement of the split, and Robinson tells TODAY that although Lopez didn't give her explicit indication that a divorce was imminent, she offered up clues about what was happening in her private life.
"I got a sense of a woman who was coming to terms with herself as a strong independent women," Robinson told TODAY host Ann Curry. "She said the most important relationship that she had was with herself and she had to learn how to love herself."
Robinson said that in retrospect, this sentiment holds extra meaning as Lopez went on to tell Robinson,"As women we are naturally giving and we take care of others. We just have this tendency to put ourselves on the back burner. But we need to be conscious about loving and taking care of ourselves, too."
Lopez didn't reveal the reasons for the breakup, but she did tell Robinson afterward that her divorce was the hardest decision she ever made in her life, and she and Anthony tried very hard. One thing that's certain, is Lopez's admiration for Anthony, despite their failed marriage.
"I will always respect Marc as a singer and performer," Lopez told Vanity Fair. "We actually work great together, and he was always very supportive. Together we could make magic -- and we did. He will always be in our lives. He will always hold a special place in my heart as the father of my children."
The September issue with Robinson's complete Lopez interview goes on sale Aug. 9.

A Special Thanks Goes Out to Sheila E. for Sharing with First Class Fashionista?s Readers!
Sheila E
Remember when ?First Class Fashionista? went to Hollywood for the ?Special Behind the Scenes Look at the Avon Voices Singing Talent Search?, and to meet the 23 semi-finalist and celebrity judges? Well, we landed an interview with the legendary, iconic female drummer, Avon Voice?s Celebrity Judge Sheila E. Sheila E. is an artist from Oakland, California who is best known for her work with Prince, which includes 80s chart topping hits ?The Glamorous Life? and ?Love Bizarre?. However, as noted by many authors, Sheila E is an artist in her own right who broke ground and paved the way for female percussionists.
Sheila E. was Prince?s drummer for two years before launching her solo career. Prince and Sheila still reunite to perform? And that?s hot! I didn?t ask, but I heard Prince and Sheila were more than just friends.
Sheila E and Prince Performing
Sheila E?s Bio As Written for the ?Avon Voices Talent Search? (Interview with First Class Fashionista below!):
Sheila Escovedo, best known to music fans as Sheila E., is one of the most talented percussionist/drummers and performers in the world. She was honored with nominations for an American Music Award, a Grammy, and an Emmy. Sheila picked up the drumsticks and began making music at the precocious age of three while watching her legendary father, percussionist Pete Escovedo, rehearse. She delivered her first solo performance to a live audience two years later, and became a top session and touring musician before the age of 20. Sheila E. has performed and/or recorded with Prince, Ringo Starr, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Gloria Estefan, Babyface, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Nicks, Phil Collins, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, and Con Funk Shun. In the 1980s, Sheila recorded the mega-hits ?The Glamorous Life? and ?Love Bizarre,? and contributed to the ?We Are The World? recording session. Sheila E?s friend Prince and her pivotal work on Prince-related projects helped to catapult her to international super-popstar stardom. In recent years, Sheila has been working behind the scenes as musical director for Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and Prince. Her producing and arranging talents have been showcased on the Latin Grammy Awards, Summer Olympics, WOW Awards, American Latin Music Awards, the Image Awards and American Idol.
Watch and listen for Sheila E?s mention and solo with Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez on the season finale of ?American Idol?!
BTW, it?s really sad to hear that the sexiest couple in Hollywood, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony called it quits? And the JLO / Marc Anthony split is heating up and getting even hotter than this performance on American Idol. With fraternal twins Max and Emme at the center, we wish this family the best of the best of luck!
NOW Sheila E. Interview with First Class Fashionista!
First Class Fashionista: What do you think about the talent search so far?
Sheila E: The Avon Voices talent search is beyond my expectations. The women from across the world that has entered this competition are very talented and I?m so glad we have some new fresh up and coming entertainers.
First Class Fashionista: Why did you choose to partner with Avon Voices talent search as a celebrity judge?
Sheila E: I wanted to partner with Avon Voices because I am for supporting women in the industry and mentoring women from all parts of the world. To be able to lend a hand, offer support from my own experience is giving back in my opinion. Many artist get rapped up in their own lives and forget that there are others (who support them no less) who can benefit greatly from just one minute of their time.
First Class Fashionista: My mother was an Avon representative and as a young military wife, I sold Avon to supplement my families income too. Now, Avon Voices has extended its reach and is empowering talented young women from all around the world.
What do you think about Avon?s impact on women and the community?
Sheila E: Avon has already made its mark with their unique way of providing beauty through their product lines. So it was a nice fit for them to honor the very women they serve by wanting to discover the next Avon Voice.
What do you think about Avon Voice?s global impact on women and the music industry?
Sheila E: I think that it?s a perfect fit. Avon has reached women from all over the world and has positively enhanced their lives by acknowledging that all women have more than beauty from the outside, but are gifted from the inside. Music is one of those fundamental gifts that most women embrace.
First Class Fashionista: You are a music icon, you broke ground in the 80s and paved the way for female drummers.
What were some of the challenges you faced?
Sheila E: Some of the most difficult challenges I faced as a woman is being taken seriously being a woman drummer. Men drummers were often in denial about my ability. Some felt that I must have slept my way into being recognized or accepted. Not until they heard me for themselves did they realize my passion and ability.
What advice would you give the women in this competition, women from all around the world, about believing in themselves, following their dreams and a chance to change the world?
Sheila E: My advice to every contestant is to follow their passion. If singing is what they truly love from the bottom of their hearts and very soul, then never give up. To not try to be someone else that they may admire, but find the unique individual within themselves. And to realize there is ALWAYS something to learn. Learning is growth, and growth is powerful!
First Class Fashionista: Born and raised in Oakland California, you even attended Oakland High School, I understand you are not only working behind the scenes as a music director for mega stars but you are still taking time out to give back to bay area communities.
Can you tell us about your music programs and charities?
Sheila E: My manager Lynn Mabry and I co-founded The Elevate Hope Foundation to provide and promote music and arts education for at risk youth and victims of child abuse. In doing so, we?ve been able to raise and donate funds and instruments to schools and facilities that offer the arts to children when normally it?s dormant or being systematically taken out. We?ve created unique music and video production based curriculum at Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services in Los Angeles for its very effective Arts Enrichment program, and donated musical instruments, audio & video equipment so that children are able to have hands on experience that allows them to not only learn but express themselves in ways they only dreamed of. We?ve recently donated thousands of dollars and the same in musical equipment to ?Keep Music Rockin Foundation? to support the San Leandro Unified School District, of which is being slammed with budget cuts and the first to go, of course, are music classes.
E Family Performances?
Sheila E: My father Pete Escovedo has always supported children in foster care by performing and or donating instruments. As a family, we?ve done so in the early years, and currently continue to give as much as we can for various charities.
First Class Fashionista: In the 80s, you were a celebrity fashion trendsetter styling ruffles, lace and big hair.
What do you think about celebrities, like Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, who take fashion risks today?
Sheila E: Young talented women today are spending far too much energy on being sexual and explicit in their shows and persona. I think it?s a smoke screen. It was a huge revelation when I realized that my craft had nothing to do with what I was wearing or how I looked. I certainly pushed the envelope in my day. Anticipating what the trades were saying about my playing, one reported that he was looking forward to what I was ?not? wearing. And to make matters more detrimental, I began to see more and more young girls dressing like me. It stopped me cold. What type of message and or example was I offering? When an artist realizes that their gift comes from God; maturity, class, and sensitivity will follow in everything they do. I look forward to seeing music being the focus of every artist?s performance. I look forward to femininity coming back to the stage and screen.
God Bless,
sheila E.

If you follow Jared Followill?s twitter account then you?ve already been privy to damning tweets that read, ?Dallas, I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am. There are internal sicknesses & problems that have needed to be addressed. No words.? And, another one that was more explanatory ? ?I love our fans so much. I know you guys aren?t stupid. I can?t lie. There are problems in our band bigger than not drinking enough Gatorade.? These were written right after King of Leon lead singer Caleb Followill bailed on their Dallas show.
Apparently the heat got to Caleb, who left the stage saying, ?I?m going to go backstage for a second, I?m going to vomit, I?m going to drink a beer and I?m going to come back out and play three more songs?, but never came back. Unsurprisingly, the audience met didn?t meet this announcement with joy at all and Jared took the microphone amidst their boos to say, ?I know you guys f?ing hate us. It?s really not our fault. We will be back as soon as possible. F?inghate Caleb, not us.? Unfortunately, they went on the cancel the next gig, which was in Houston, right after.
Whatever their problems are ? and they seem to be plenty as there have been numerous accounts of brawls between them ? they?ve released an official KOL statement to placate their fans. It says that the problem started when Caleb?s ?vocal cords seizing? started mucking the vibe up and that they?re playing more shows in September to make up for the debacle. They?re hitting Dallas on September 21 and following up with Houston the next day. Tickets and refunds for the two shows that were just canned will be allowed. Hopefully this next round won?t end up with disastrous results again!

LOS ANGELES ? The tiny blue "Smurfs" battled big-name, big-budget "Cowboys & Aliens" to a surprising tie at the domestic weekend box office with each film ringing up an estimated $36.2 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates on Sunday.
"The Smurfs" live-action and animated 3-D film drew families to the latest adventure of the classic Belgian cartoon characters and grossed higher-than-expected sales. "Cowboys & Aliens" fell short of pre-release estimates from box-office watchers.
The totals are estimates of ticket sales from United States and Canadian theaters for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The leader will not be known until actual sales are tallied on Monday.

Going into the weekend, "Cowboys & Aliens" was seen easily topping box-office charts with starpower from James Bond actor Daniel Craig and "Indiana Jones" star Harrison Ford, plus director Jon Favreau from the hit "Iron Man" series and Steven Spielberg among the producers. The film is set in the Wild West in 1873, when a spaceship arrives in Arizona and runs into a posse of cowboys.

The movie offered "a fresh and unique concept," said Nikki Rocco, president of distribution for Universal Pictures, a division of Comcast Corp that released the film. "It was a bet worth taking with these filmmakers."
A lower-than-expected total for "Cowboys & Aliens" collided with a bigger draw from "The Smurfs," a movie that revived characters that debuted more than 50 years ago.

"In the summer, family films are a hot commodity," Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst with Hollywood.com, said of the "Smurfs" success.

Earlier this week we took a moment to admire and soak in the perfection that is Ryan Gosling (and drool over his hottest looks), but can we also take a moment to appreciate the awesomeness of his Crazy, Stupid, Love costar Emma Stone? Emma is not only sexy with her fierce red hair and sultry voice, but she?s also super funny which makes her even more of a babe. And as if she couldn?t get any cooler, we realized there?s yet to be a moment where she doesn?t look utterly perfect on the red carpet. Can we just be friends already, Emma?
In appreciation of Emma we?ve created a collection of her fiercest looks from the beginning of her career in 2006 until now. Check it out!
Yesterday, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt made an appearance at the Sarajevo Film Festival, and we don?t have access to any of the photos! Boo. You can see some here and here, though. Angelina wore an oddly bright Elie Saab gown and Brad looked nice. Angelina was there because she was awarded the ?Honorary Heart of Sarajevo? Award for directing a film about the war, The Land of Blood and Honey, which will be out later this year. When Angelina?s leading lady, Zana Marjanovic, presented Angelina with the award, Angelina received wild, non-stop applause, and an insider says Angelina was nearly moved to tears. Angelina told reporters, ?I love this country. I was honored to have a chance to meet everybody. This movie was a chance to bring attention to the situation that happened so long ago, and I hope that it brings attention and more dialogue to remind people what everybody here went through.? Damn, I wish we had ANY photos from this film festival - Michael Fassbender was there a few days ago with a newly shaved head too. BOO on our photo agencies for not buying these photos.
Anyway, Angelina has a new interview in The Financial Times this weekend. You can only read the whole thing by subscription, which I?m not going to do, but various outlets had excerpts from the piece:
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have maintained a nomadic lifestyle with their six children over the years, but the kids have strong connections to their own cultures, Jolie reveals in a new interview. The actress, 36, who adopted three of her children ? Maddox, 9, from Cambodia; Pax, 7, from Vietnam; and Zahara, 6, from Ethiopia ? and gave birth to Shiloh, 5, in Namibia, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 3, in France, makes sure her kids know where they came from.
?They are all learning about each other?s cultures as well as being proud of their own,? she tells the Financial Times. ?So it?s not like just the boys get to do the Asian thing. They all have their flags over their beds and their individual pride.?
Of course, keeping up with their international visits is a challenge. ?We owe Vietnam a visit, because Pax is due,? she says. ?Z wants to get back to Africa, and Shiloh too. So everyone takes their turns in their country.?
Jolie also opened up about becoming a mom of six has changed her relationship with work.
?I?ve never not been grateful to be an actor,? she says. ?But I think when I was younger I needed [acting] more. I was trying to question things in life so you find these characters that help you find things and grow.?
?It?s like being in therapy, in a way. You?re drawn to certain roles because they question something about life, or about love, or about freedom. You ask these questions as you grow up: am I strong enough, am I sane enough? Do I understand love, do I understand myself?? Now, she adds, ?I?m older and I know who I am ? and I?m less interested in the character helping me answer something ? than in being able to answer it for myself, as a woman, as an adult, with my family.?
Talking about Salt, Jolie explains: ?I?d just had the twins,? she recalls. ?I?d been in a nightgown for a very, very long time. And I was sitting in the hospital breastfeeding and reading this script in my nightgown, feeling so soft and mama ? and I was flipping these pages and it was all fighting and shooting guns. I thought, ?That?s what I need. I need to get out of my nightgown and I need a gun.? I?m sure many a woman who has been through childbirth has thought ?It would be nice to get a little physical, get a little wild ? to remember what that other side is like.? ?
Jolie and her longtime love Brad Pitt have six children together ? Maddox, 9, Pax, 7, Zahara, 6, Shiloh, 5, and 3-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne ? and the family is famous for their nomadic lifestyle. ?Home is wherever we are,? she says. But does she ever feel rootless? ?Yes, but happily. I?m very bad at staying in one place. I?m also bad at sitting still? There?s so much to explore in the world? So I love travel. If you can travel I think it?s the best way to raise kids.?
Her directorial debut ? In the Land of Blood and Honey ? is a love story she also wrote, which is set in the Bosnian war. ?I prefer [being behind the camera] to acting,? she admits. ?I think I?ve learnt something from all of [the directors I've worked with] ? even the ones I didn?t like? I also learned a lot from Clint Eastwood about how to appreciate the members of the crew, empowering them to do their job.?
But Jolie doesn?t plan to stay in the business forever. ?As Brad and I get older we?re going to do fewer films. I?ve been working for a long time, he?s been working for a long time,? she says. ?We?ve had a nice run and I don?t want to be doing this our whole lives. There are a lot of other things to do.?
She has been to Cambodia this year, to shoot an advertising campaign for Louis Vuitton with Annie Leibovitz. An impoverished country might seem like an odd place for a luxury fashion house to shoot an ad campaign but the final decision was made by Jolie herself. ?To actually do it there, to highlight the beauty of the country, was something I was very happy to do because it is a place people should travel to,? she says. Indeed, she and Pitt have a house there??it?s a little place on stilts?. Her fee from the campaign will go towards charitable projects in the country, she says, building on work she began with a foundation the family established in Maddox?s name. ?It?s focused on protecting mountains from deforestation, poaching and clearing landmines. We put it together for Mad so when he?s older he?ll hopefully take it over.?
China is on her list of places still to explore, and she would love to see Burma, ?but not in the wrong circumstances?, given that the country is under the control of an oppressive military junta. ?And Iran. I?d love to go [to] Iran.? Her dream, however, is to ?cross the Sahara. It takes 28 days ? it would have to be on a camel. I wonder if I could do it in pieces and station the kids along the way,? she muses.

I understand that Angelina?s top priority is being a mom, and good for her. But I?m getting so friggin? tired of hearing her talk about how she?s going to be cutting back or phasing out working and all of that. She?s been saying it for years, and she needs to find a new topic of conversation for all of the interviews she does year after year to promote all of films she does year after year. I don?t begrudge her working, nor do I begrudge her the time she spends with her family. But I just get tired of her ringing the same ?I?m taking time off, I?m spending more time with my family? bell when she works about the same as always.
UPDATE: Ah, Slate has the full Financial Times article here. It?s a pretty good piece. The best part is her response when she?s asked about The News of the World, the tabloid which she and Brad sued after they reported that she and Brad were breaking up. ?I did hear something about that ? clearly I never read it. So it?s hard to know how much of a loss it is.? Diplomatic.
